This summer we were lucky to have three interns join us. Josh and Ty are familiar faces who worked with us last year, and Luke is a new member of the team and has enjoyed a dynamic internship experience. Let’s learn a bit more about them!
Josh
Josh is from Smithville, Missouri and will be a senior at the University of Central Missouri where he is pursuing a degree in Construction Management. With an uncle who was an architect and a dad who flipped houses, Josh became interested in construction at a young age. At 15, Josh was working at a horse farm where he built small barns – this experience solidified his passion for pursuing a career in construction.
Throughout his internship, Josh has been pleasantly surprised by the level of trust that is given to interns. He has enjoyed taking on superintendent-level responsibilities and interacting with subcontractors, learning the value of clear and intentional communication.
Outside of construction, Josh enjoys camping and trail riding with 4 wheelers and UTVs.
Ty
Ty is from Shawnee, Kansas and will be beginning his senior year at Kansas State University, studying construction management. His career choice was inspired by his father, who is also in the construction industry. When he was younger, Josh would help his dad with all kinds of projects around the house.
During his internship, Ty has enjoyed working on many different jobsites and performing a lot of different roles. “It is reassuring to see the many different directions that a career in the construction industry can go,” he says.
A key takeaway Ty learned from a tenured Superintendent is, “If you aren’t six weeks ahead, then you are six weeks behind,” highlighting how important it is to plan ahead and know every detail of your project.
In his spare time, Ty enjoys spending time at the lake and is on a competitive BBQ team. We asked him for his Kansas-ranked pulled pork recipe… but he told us that was classified information.
Lukas
Luke is from Seneca, Kansas and will be going into his junior year at Kansas State University where he is studying
construction management. For his senior project, Luke chose to build a paver stone patio with a fire pit and this experience inspired him to pursue construction. After visiting the K-State construction program he was confident that construction was the career for him.
This internship has been a great learning opportunity for Luke. He has spent time working alongside some of our most experienced superintendents and has been amazed by the how much they do and their depth of industry knowledge. One of our supers joked that Luke should pursue a minor in psychology, because being a superintendent is 10% construction and 90% people.
When Luke isn’t working or hanging out with friends, he enjoys hunting and fishing with his dad.
